3 Safe-Space Strategies for Your Baby in the New Year

Entering a new year with a new baby can be a remarkable experience. There are so many “firsts.” Your baby may get to see their first snow, hear their first winter-themed song, wear their first baby parka, or it could be the first time your baby sleeps the whole night through, which could be a huge step for their development. Wherever they are on their journey through the early stages of growth, your baby must be kept safe and comfortable during times of sleep and rest so that they can experience many more wonderful “firsts.” To ensure your baby sleeps safely in their bedside bassinet, here are some measures you can take that can make all the difference.

Bassinet That Vibrates

Dress Baby in Safe Sleepwear

You want your baby to be comfortable and cozy, but it is critical that they do not become overheated. An overheated baby is at higher risk of SIDS. You can find a wearable blanket or a SleepSack® Swaddle that can be adjusted for the proper temperature to meet safe TOG values. A TOG value is the international standard measurement of how well a blanket can keep you warm. You can also adjust your baby’s sleepwear to suit any seasonal weather changes. Winter months such as January are likely colder than summer months like July (or the opposite in the southern hemisphere).

Create a Safe Sleeping Space for Baby

In addition to providing comfortable sleepwear for bedtime, your baby must be placed on their back to sleep in a safe space. Before your baby is 6 months old, room sharing may be encouraged, but bed-sharing with your baby is NOT. Use a bedside bassinet that meets current safety standards. It should have a firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet to ensure your baby is in the safest environment possible. You will also want to clear any soft objects out of the bassinet to remove the hazards that can cause suffocation. If you have twins, make sure they are separated by a breathable mesh wall, which can be found in a high-quality twin bassinet.

Keep Mommy and Baby Comfortable

Not only is it important to employ the proper measures for your baby to sleep safely, but it’s also important that all of your designated caregivers are prepared to tend to the baby’s needs. This is easier when the parents’ comfort and recovery are taken into consideration. Mom can have an opportunity to recuperate, and it can be easier for her to take care of her young one, with a bedside bassinet that vibrates. Your baby will need to be fed at least once throughout the night. A bassinet that swivels and vibrates can make it easier for your baby to get back to sleep without being in the arms of an exhausted parent who may not be able to keep their eyes open after their baby is fed.

Ultimately, your baby’s safety comes first no matter the time of year, and you always have the power to implement safety measures that can make all the difference when it comes to sleep safety.
