How to Build a Bond and Set Up a Sleep Routine with Twins
As parents, bringing newborn twins into your home is the start of something new in your life and theirs. Not only are you juggling two new babies, but you’re also managing feeding, napping, and sleep-time schedules for the whole family. Even in the face of this new lifestyle, you can establish beneficial practices and use tools such as a bedside bassinet to help your twins build and maintain their special bond while encouraging safe routines for everyone in the home.

Encourage Closeness While Everyone Is Awake
It can be tempting to allow your twins to sleep side-by-side. However, this can be dangerous for babies, and you want to reduce any risks associated with any bed-sharing.
You might feel too exhausted to move, especially with two babies. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines state that it is safest for babies to sleep on a firm, flat surface by themselves with no blanket or stuffed animals. These recommendations can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and keep babies safe.
That being said, you can encourage closeness between you, your partner, and your twins with a twin bassinet. This will keep them close to your bed and each other, while keeping their sleep spaces separate and maintaining safe practices. The best time to encourage closeness is while everyone is awake.
Coordinate Nap Time
Ensuring your twins are actually awake at the same time involves some strategy, especially at the start. You can help encourage similar schedules by coordinating feeding and sleeping times.
This means that if one baby wakes up from a nap hungry, you can decide whether or not it’s best to wake the other twin so that they can both be fed, awake, and asleep at the same—or nearly the same—times.
The most important part here is safety. Decide what course of action can keep you and your twins feeling safe during feeding and napping times.
Communicate with Your Partner
As your twins get older, you and your partner can help their development by communicating openly with each other. What are your expectations for the role you each play in taking care of your twins, and how can you support each other in times of exhaustion while maintaining safe practices to keep your twins safe?
This can look like ensuring one parent is on the look-out to keep the other parent awake during feedings and skin-to-skin time. It could also mean working together to determine the proper age to transition your twins from their bedside bassinet that vibrates to a crib.
Get on the same page as your support system so that you can promote safe practices for your twins. It’s your job to keep your little ones safe as they build a relationship with you and with each other. Whether they need to be fed or put down for their nap, you can help establish schedules to ease them into each new stage of life.
