Everything You Need to Prepare for Your First Night Home with Baby
You’ve made it through birth and the first few days at the hospital, but now it’s time to come home. The key to a successful transition to home is to be prepared, as, unlike at the hospital, very little is provided for you. You should already have a bedside bassinet or other safe sleep method picked out and set up, as well as supplies for feeding and changing. Here are some of the crucial items you will need for your first night home with your baby.
Unboxed Diapers
It might sound obvious, but you should have a box of diapers in newborn size already open and distributed through your house. If you are sleeping with your baby in your bedroom, that means having diapers handy. You can use a caddy, keep them on your nightstand, or whatever way is easiest for you to grab in the middle of the night.
Ready-to-Go Wipes
Keep a package of baby wipes near your diapers so you can grab both at the same time. Be warned that the container wipes come in can make it hard to pull just one wipe at a time. You may want a hard shell container that makes it easier to get a wipe if you have the space.
A Bassinet for Safe Sleep
It can be a tough choice finding the right bassinet for you and your baby. You may want one that swivels and lets you keep your baby close by so that you won’t even have to get out of bed to feed or change their diaper. A bassinet that vibrates can help soothe and relax your baby, getting them ready to go back to sleep.
Comfy Clothes for Mom
Get comfy clothes ready. This is probably going to be pajamas and other loungewear for the foreseeable future. Have an extra outfit or two lined up as well.
All the Onesies
Why do you need an extra outfit? Spit-up is bound to happen. You’ll also need onesies ready to switch into. The less time it takes to find one and change, the sooner your baby can go back to sleep, and the sooner you can get sleep as well.
Burp Cloths to Keep You and Baby Clean
Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding with formula, you will have to burp your baby, and preferably before they spit up. You will want a stack of burp cloths ready near where you are feeding.
Feeding Pillow
Again, no matter how you are feeding, you will want a feeding pillow to help prop up your baby. This will make feeding significantly easier than if you were just holding your baby.
Swaddles to Fight the Moro Reflex
Have at least one swaddle ready for bedtime. It will keep your baby warm, but the main reason for swaddling is that it helps fight the Moro reflex. This reflex causes babies to throw their arms and legs wide, startling them awake.
Bottles for Formula or Extra Breast Milk
You should already have bottles that have been cleaned and dried, ready for use, especially if you are using formula, but also for extra pumped breast milk. There are a wide variety of bottles, and each baby is different, so you may need to experiment.
