Why Bassinets are a Safer Sleep Option for Your Newborn
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are several ways
to ensure your baby sleeps as safely as possible. They recommend sharing
a room with your infant until they are at least six months old, but
preferable twelve months. They also say you should put your baby to
sleep on their back to keep their faces clear, and keep the sleep space
free of loose bedding and toys. One simple way to check off all three of
these recommendations for helping your baby get sounder, safer sleep is
by using a bedside bassinet.
Keep Baby Close
Not everyone’s bedroom is large enough to accommodate a full-size crib, but most people can fit a bedside bassinet. These are usually much smaller than a crib, and they’re designed to fit snugly right next to your bed. You can even find a model that offers full rotation and swiveling, which allows you to bring your baby a few inches over your mattress, keeping them even closer to you. Some bassinets feature mesh walls for better breathability, and these also help you keep an eye on your little one while they sleep. Look for bassinets with side walls that lower, too, so you can reach out to comfort your infant without having to get out of bed. Anything that helps you get back to sleep just as quickly as your baby, right?
All Babies Should be Back Sleepers
We all have our favorite way of sleeping: on our sides, our stomachs or buried under a mountain of pillows (or pets!) For babies, there’s only one preferred sleeping position: on their backs, with nothing in the crib or bassinet with them. Infants, especially newborns, aren’t able to lift their heads or torsos easily, so placing them on their stomachs to sleep isn’t recommended. Though they gain increased mobility as they get older, the American Academy of Pediatrics still encourages you to lay your infant down to sleep on his or her back until they’re at least 12 months old. Some brands, like HALO® Sleep, make this easier to remember by stitching “Back is best” on some of their products.
Bare Bassinets are Best
Babies are wigglers—anyone who’s tried to change a new infant’s diaper can attest to that. And babies can also wiggle in their sleep. Keeping loose blankets and soft objects out of the bassinet ensures your baby doesn’t get caught or tangled in the bedding, which means an overall safer sleeping environment. If your infant craves some form of comfort to sleep more soundly, consider a bassinet that vibrates. You may also look for a bassinet with sound machines built in, to play soothing music or noises, or one that includes a nightlight. Dress your newborn for bed in a wearable blanket or swaddle to keep them extra cozy. With these features and accessories, you can be sure your little one is warm, safe, and snug while they sleep.
