How to Keep Your Baby Warm as Nights Grow Colder
As the cold months set in, it’s time to start thinking about how you will keep your baby safe and warm during naps and especially at bedtime. Keeping your baby warm can help them stay asleep, but overheating can also be dangerous. Before setting your baby in the bedside bassinet, follow these tips to make sure your baby is comfortable during cold nights.
Signs of Overheating
Before following any other tips, it’s important to know the signs of when your baby is overheating. They can be warm to the touch, have a rapid heartbeat, or have red skin. If they have a fever but are not sweating, chances are they are overheating. Your baby might also be lethargic or unresponsive, dizzy or confused, or vomiting. Test the back of their neck, and if it’s hot, they are likely overheating.
Dress Warmly
The first step is to dress your baby warmly. This could be, for example, microfleece pajamas with socks and mittens. Do not use a hat or head covering. Instead of one thick layer, you can use several thinner layers. Try to dress your baby in one layer more than you are wearing. If you are only using one layer and a sleep sack (more on the sleep sack later), be sure to use heavier material.
Set the Thermostat
As you set your baby down in their bassinet that vibrates, check the thermostat. Their room should ideally be between 68 and 72 degrees. A lightly clothed adult should feel cozy, but not hot or cold. If this is not possible, a small, portable heater can be used, but you should monitor the room temperature. Some baby monitors come with a thermometer that will help in this situation, letting you easily tell if it is getting too hot in the nursery.
Use a Sleeping Bag
Remember layering clothes? A sleeping bag is a great way to ensure your baby stays warm. It’s like a wearable blanket without the dangers of using a blanket, helping keep your baby safe and warm. Be sure to check the TOG rating, which measures insulation in clothes, as it stacks with pajamas and other garments and could add up to being too hot. The sleeping bag will help immensely in keeping your baby safe and warm and can also act as a swaddle with younger babies.
Keep the Draft Down
Move your baby several feet away from any fans, vents, drafty windows, or outside walls, or your baby could feel a cold draft. If possible, close windows and doors to prevent cold air from entering the room, and if you are using a heater, warm air from leaving the room. Curtains can also help insulate against windows that could otherwise let heat out.
