9 Tips for Baby-Proofing Your Home for Baby Safety Month
September is Baby Safety Month, and it’s the best time to do a check
around your home to make sure it is baby safe. From ensuring you have a
safe bedside bassinet to covering sharp corners on tables, here is a checklist that will help you make sure your home is safe for your baby.

Bedside Bassinet |
Creating a Safe Sleep Environment
One of the most important aspects of baby safety is safe sleep. You can have a bedside bassinet, but you should not share your bed with your baby. You can even find a twin bassinet with a mesh divider for your twins so they can safely sleep in the same bassinet, next to the bed, while staying safe. Be sure to remove loose blankets, toys, stuffed animals, and anything that isn’t the baby or clothes. If it’s cold, use a sleeping bag instead of a swaddle. It’s like a wearable blanket that is not loose, unlike traditional swaddles.
Baby-Proofing Door Handles
Unless you want to chase your toddler down the street, it’s a good idea to baby-proof door handles. No matter if you have a round handle or a bar handle, there are ways you can prevent babies from opening doors and getting into places they should not have access to.
Anchor Heavy Furniture to Walls
It is surprisingly easy for a baby or toddler to pull a dresser, bookshelf, or TV down, possibly on top of them. Use wall anchors to ensure heavy furniture and technology are secured and won’t topple over onto your little one. Tall floor lamps should also be secured if possible. Move them behind other furniture.
Plug Electrical Outlets
Electrical plugs pose a dangerous threat to babies. Whether it’s a slider plug from a power strip or putting plugs in outlets, ensure your baby can’t stick their finger or favorite small toy in the outlet.
Wrap Up Window Cords
Window cords, such as from blinds, pose a hazard. Wrap them up around hooks you can install high on the wall to prevent little hands from playing with the cords. While you are at it, install window stops to prevent your baby from opening a window and falling outside. Windows should open no more than 4 inches.
Install Stair Gates
Gate off stairs at both ends, and have at least the gate on the floor where your baby currently is always closed. It’s far too easy to slip and tumble down stairs.
Round Off Table Corners
A fall onto a table corner can hurt at best and do a lot of damage at worst. Round off corners with rubber covers.
Lock the Cabinet Under the Sink
Use baby locks so that your baby can’t get to wherever you store chemicals, such as bleach or dishwasher soap. Even better, move it out of reach first.
Turn Down the Hot Water
Finally, turn down your water heater so that you don’t accidentally burn your baby, their skin is much more sensitive than yours. Set it to less than 120 degrees.
