4 Tips to Make Road Trips with Twins Easier

Trying to manage a road trip with twin babies can have its difficulties, but there are a number of ways you can make it significantly easier and safer for yourself and your babies. From bringing your own twin bassinet to having familiar creature comforts on hand from home, here are a few tips that can make your road trip with twins easier and happier for everyone involved.

Twin Bassinet

Bring Your Own Bassinet

It might be hard to accommodate twin babies where you are going, whether it’s the grandparents’ house or a hotel. You will want to bring your own twin bassinet that vibrates so that you know you have a safe place for your babies to sleep. This may be hard to get in the car but will be worth it. If you can’t fit a twin bassinet, try bringing two smaller bassinets instead. The key is that you have bassinets that can safely fit your babies and have a vibration option to help them fall asleep in an unfamiliar place. The twin bassinet can also help as they will know they have each other, even when they are somewhere new, to give each other reassurance.

Keep a Regular Schedule

If at all possible, keep a regular schedule. When it’s time to drive, try to time it with normal naptimes. If your babies are 4 months old or younger, time drives around feedings instead. Again, this can be a challenge depending on where you are going, and you might arrive during naptime to grandparents who want to spend time with the babies, but try to stick to as normal of a schedule as possible. Your babies will be happier if they are getting the same amount of sleep at normal times than if their schedule is interrupted, which will make everyone else happier as well.

Have Creature Comforts From Home

Do what you can to bring familiar creature comforts with you. While you might not be able to pack your blackout curtains from home, you should be able to bring a portable white noise machine to help drown out sounds that the babies are not used to. Try to hang out towels or sheets to provide a dark environment. The goal is to mimic the experience they have at home, which will give a sense of normalcy. This also means bringing any swaddles and wearable blankets that they might wear while at home.

Pack Extra Supplies

Bring more supplies than you think you will need (and twins need a lot). Extra clothes, diapers, wipes, and burp cloths might need an entire suitcase to transport. Try keeping what is absolutely essential in a diaper bag and have the rest strategically placed around the car to take up the least amount of space as possible. Keep a small box of each item you need in the trunk, just in case you need more than what is in the diaper bag or you need to make an emergency pitstop and the diaper bag is buried. Plus, you can use the extra box to refill the diaper bag while out and on the go.
