6 Tips for Surviving the Hazy Days of Newborn Babies

The first few months after giving birth can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to sleep. It can feel like you’re spending your days in a haze. One of the best ways to combat the sleep-deprived newborn period is by getting more sleep, which means trying to improve your baby’s sleep. Here are some tips to help you get your baby to sleep more and to help make it through the hazy days ahead.
Bedside Bassinet

 Suppress the Moro Reflex

Infants have what is called the Moro reflex, also known as the startle reflex. Your baby might suddenly throw their arms out while asleep, and the sudden motion can wake them up. You can ease this reflex by swaddling your baby, either with a blanket or a sack that makes it easy to swaddle quickly and make quick midnight changes.

Sleep When the Baby Sleeps

Do not fall into the trap of thinking you will get things done when the baby sleeps. Instead, during the haze, it is best to sleep when the baby sleeps. Once you have put your baby in a bassinet that vibrates to help them fall asleep faster, get ready to take your own nap. Once your baby is asleep, close your eyes and take a nap to catch up on your own sleep.

Clear Your Sleeping Space

While you will want to make sure that there’s not much that can hold your baby’s attention and keep them awake, you will also want to make sure that your sleeping space is clutter-free. Your sleeping space should be calm, organized, and soothing, rather than filled with clutter and chaos that can distract you, such as a pile of laundry.

Keep Night Feedings Brief

You want late-night feedings to be as quick as possible. The easiest way to do that is to have a bedside bassinet so you can comfort and feed your baby as soon as they wake up. This prevents your baby from working themselves up while they wait for you, making it much harder to go back to sleep. Keep supplies nearby, such as diapers and wipes. For even faster feedings, if your fridge is on another floor, consider getting a mini-fridge to store extra breast milk or formula in bottles, ready to go.

Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether you need an hour to go to the store, you need someone to watch your baby while you get a nap, or you just want to cook dinner with your partner, it’s important to remember that you can ask for help. Enlist family members like parents, siblings, or your partner when you need someone to take over for you. It takes a village, after all.

Know That This Is Temporary

Finally, know that this situation is temporary. You will sleep through the night again. You will have free time again. As your baby gets used to being in the world, and you get used to being a new parent, you’ll find your routine. Finally, remember to take time to enjoy this stage—your baby will never be this tiny again!
